The Fachsprachprüfung: Process and the Three Parts Explained

The Fachsprachprüfung (FSP) tests whether you can communicate confidently in German in everyday clinical practice. It is practical and usually has three parts that recreate a typical clinical situation.

Part 1: The doctor-patient conversation (history taking)

You take a patient's history from a simulated patient — in plain, understandable language, not technical terms. You are assessed on gathering the history, empathy and clarity.

Part 2: The doctor's letter (documentation)

You then document the conversation in an Arztbrief — in writing, under time pressure, on a German keyboard. Structure, medical language and spelling count. Why this part is so often underestimated: Keyboard & spelling.

Part 3: The doctor-doctor conversation

Finally you present the case to a colleague — now in medical terminology. You are tested on technical vocabulary, precision and correctly translating lay language into professional language.
